Datex Exhibit

Services Provided: This exhibit was designed and created during my days at Access in Whitinsville, MA. During the design stage, the client made it very clear that the medical workstations perform a number of functions in a multitude of configurations. As a result of this, I was brought in early to create pre-construction drawings that were intended to help sell a particular look, maintain a certain level of conformity to the requirements, and assist in the estimating process. It took five or six generations of drawings before a final configuration was agreed upon.

Once this leg of the journey had been completed, the real work began. I was responsible for coordinating the development of the construction drawings with the structural engineer while actually creating the construction drawings. Part of my responsibilities also included creating shape files and full size plots of the actual parts and pieces for the shop during construction. Once that was completed. I had to start the work on the assembly drawings so they would be ready to ship with the exhibit on time. The hardest part of this project was the curved sloping header and the fabric panel inserts with the photo images on them. When I asked the designer why he could not provide me with accurate CAD files on it, he simply replied the there was not enough time to complete them. I later learned the truth when I had completely modeled it up and went to start taking 2D snap shots of the model for my construction drawings. The error message I received from my AutoCAD program was: “exceeds reasonable amount of tessellation calculations to complete”.

Needless to say, I had to use alternative methods to create the construction drawings. All in all, the client was thrilled, and the exhibit appeared exactly as the designer intended it.
